Gender Equality Directives

Gender Equality Directives binding on Finland as a Member State of the European Union:

Directive 2006/54/EC. Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the implementation of the principle of equal opportunities and equal treatment of men and women in matters of employment and occupation (recast).

With effect from 15 August 2009, Directive 2006/54/EC shall repeal the below-mentioned Directives. References made to the repealed Directive shall be construed as being made to Directive 2006/54/EC and should be read in accordance with the correlation table in Annex II: 

  • Council Directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the application of the principle of equal pay for men and women (75/117/EEC).

  • Council Directive on the implementation of the principle of equal treatment for men and women as regards access to employment, vocational training and promotion, and working conditions (76/207/EEC), as amended by Directive 2002/73/EC.  

  • Council Directive on the implementation of the principle of equal treatment for men and women in occupational social security schemes (86/378/EEC), as amended by Directive 96/97/EC.

  • Council Directive on the burden of proof in cases of discrimination based on sex (97/80/EC), as amended by Directive 98/52/EC.

Directive 79/7/EEC. Council Directive on the progressive implementation of the principle of equal treatment for men and women in matters of social security.

Directive 86/613/EEC. Council Directive on the application of the principle of equal treatment between men and women engaged in an activity, including agriculture, in a self-employed capacity, and on the protection of self-employed women during pregnancy and motherhood.

  • With effect from 5 August 2012, the above-mentioned Directive shall be repealed with Directive 2010/41/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on the application of the principle of equal treatment between men and women engaged in an activity in a self-employed capacity and repealing Council Directive 86/613/EEC.

Directive 92/85/EEC. Council Directive on the introduction of measures to encourage improvements in the safety and health at work of pregnant workers and workers who have recently given birth or are breastfeeding.

Directive 96/34/EC. Council Directive on the framework agreement on parental leave concluded by UNICE, CEEP and the ETUC.

  • With effect from 8 March 2012, the above-mentioned Directive shall be repealed with Council Directive 2010/18/EU implementing the revised Framework Agreement on parental leave concluded by BUSINESSEUROPE, UEAPME, CEEP and ETUC and repealing Directive 96/34/EC (Text with EEA relevance)

Directive 2004/113/EC. Council Directive implementing the principle of equal treatment between men and women in the access to and supply of goods and services.
