Discrimination in other spheres of life

The compensation available under the Finnish Equality Act is limited to discrimination in the workplace, in educational institutions, in the activities of labour market organisations and in the provision of goods and services.

In other spheres of life, discrimination can result in

  • compensation under the Finnish Tort Liability Act, subject to certain conditions being met. The claimant must bring court proceedings in order to qualify for compensation; or
  • prohibitions issued by the Finnish Equality Board. The Finnish Equality Board can prohibit further discriminatory practice, if necessary, under penalty of a fine. Cases can be referred to the Finnish Equality Board by the Finnish Ombudsman for Equality or by confederations of labour market organisations.
